Maybe Stone could become a powerful anti-mercenary force. I mean I am pretty sure leading up to the Dark Ages he was having his armies forcibly shut down Mercenary Units by the hundred. Can you guys imagine if we all suddenly became outlaws because the politicians decided that private individuals and corporations were no longer allowed to legally possess battlemechs?
That is the most insane, preposterous idea to ever hit Merc-Net. Merc-Net is all about honourless lucre-warriors stomping around in big BattleMechs for ten sawbucks out of any Tom, Dick and Harry's wallet. Merc-Net is all about mercenaries being run by the DMM and being given more respect than Rodney Dangerfield. How could you possibly suggest mercenaries becoming outlawed?
It would mean a massive, universe-spanning campaign of thoroughly dissatisfied Spheroids that have had it right up to here with guns-for-hire mucking up their home planets. It would mean vicious, conniving personalities tweaking the strings behind the scenes to cause wholesale chaos and bloodshed for their own gains. It would mean elite mercenary units being hunted down like outlaws and forced to surrender their most prized machines of war at PPC-point.
It would mean House regulars turning on their own mercs. It would mean Succession Wars style border conflicts as Houses get stripped of valuable crack regiments of mercs. It would mean Clans steamrolling into the Lyran Alliance when the Kell Hounds are threatened with disbandment. It would mean the organisation of self-styled posses whose job it is to run down, say, the Antarian Lancers and exterminate them. It would mean public outcry against the mercenary trade. It would mean mercs turning on mercs. It would mean mercs banding together in the face of overwhelming firepower.
It would be glorious. DAMN I LOVE IT!!!
